Spring is here and it’s the perfect time to enjoy those patios, porches, and backyards! While some may have already created their ideal outdoor living area, others might be interested in
updating their spaces to include current trends. If that sounds like you, here are some of the outdoor living trends for 2024 to consider incorporating at your home.
In the past few years, we’ve seen indoor spaces replicated outdoors: outdoor kitchens, living areas, and dining areas. This trend will continue in 2024, but experts predict that we’ll see more continuity in design features inside and outside the home. This could include a color palette or even flooring choices. You might choose a paint color for your living room that you can continue to use for decorations outside. Or you could lay tile inside that would also look great on the patio. This kind of continuity serves to increase your home’s overall living space.
Another trend that we’re seeing this year is modular furniture. This is an example of interior design choices continuing in outdoor spaces as we’ve seen these functional pieces growing in popularity in living rooms. Now we’re also seeing homeowners choose modular furniture for their outdoor living areas as they can be reconfigured and customized over time. This trend might require a bigger investment up front, but these pieces are meant to be long-lasting because they can be rearranged and the covers can be switched out.
The next trend is smart features. Smart features are nothing new, but as homeowners spend more time outside, they’re looking to incorporate smart technology into those spaces as well. High-tech lighting and surround sound are popular features- there are even options to build surround sound into your outdoor seating. Smart technology also includes enhanced security features such as cameras and motion sensors. These features add convenience and comfort to outdoor spaces. Our homes have been “smart” for a while, now it’s time for our outdoor spaces to catch up.
In terms of landscaping and plants for outdoor living, we’re seeing more edible gardens and a push for sustainability. Not every homeowner is planting a garden with the intention of growing all of the fruits and vegetables their family needs, but many are setting aside a small portion of the yard to grow plants they can use for everyday food and cooking. Similarly, more homeowners are turning to sustainable landscaping. Sustainable landscaping can be growing plants that are native to where you live or, especially in Texas, growing drought-resistant plants. Making those choices can help create an outdoor oasis that requires less water and maintenance. Both gardening and sustainable landscaping are great ways to grow plants that will enhance the exterior of your home and even improve curb appeal.
Spring is a great time to enjoy your outdoor spaces, and it might be a good time to incorporate some new features. Whether or not the outdoor living trends for 2024 are your cup of tea, I hope you get to take advantage of this season and the outdoor living areas at your home.
